Arasaries. (pteroglossus castanotis), very exotic medium-sized Amazonian bird. Its beak has a very characteristic yellow basal line. Its plumage is black up to the neck, and the sides of my head and throat are brown. Its chest and belly are yellow with a red band that adorns them. You can see it looking for food in trees and bushes, where they explore cavities in search of insects or eggs.
It lives in humid jungles, forests, secondary forests and in wooded river channels. Its diet is based mainly on fruits, and I complement it with flowers, nectar, insects, eggs and small chicks.
Its species is distributed in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Paraguay and Argentina
What does my name mean? The word Pteroglossus derives from the Greek “pteron” which means feather and “glossa” which is tongue, alluding to the characteristic shape of my tongue. The epithet castanotiss means chestnut-eared and derives from the Greek roots “kastanon” which is chestnut and “otis” which means ears.
